Seward and our Fjords and Glacier Tour

Our cabin at Bear Creek.

Bear Creek. The owner of he cabin where we stayed told us there was a bear that liked to sit down at the creek on the fallen trees and eat the salmon out of the water. Unfortunately we never saw him when we were there. There was so much salmon in the creek he could have had a feast no matter where he was along the creek.

The water in Bear Creek by our cabin was so thick with King Salmon that you didn't need a fishing rod. You could just reach down and pick dozens of them right out of the water. King salmon were trying to make their way over this dam of trees, but most didn't make it and died on the logs or in the water.

Seward small boat harbor.

On Tuesday we took an all day cruise/tour through the Keani Fjords to view glaciers and wild life ending with a dinner on Fox Island. It was a fun day even though it was very over cast, cold and drizzly at times.

A little sea otter just floating along as we pulled out of the small boat harbor.

Sea lions.

The Alalik Glacier. The wind coming off of this was pretty cold.

We saw several humpback whales as well as dolphins that would run along next to the ship and jump and play along with us. Our pictures were not very good because by the time we focused our cameras, they were already diving down into the water.

Puffins on the rocks.

Sea lions on the rocks at Chiswell Islands.

It was very cold and rainy by the time we got to Fox Island for our salmon ad prime rib dinner.

Mount Redoubt and the Kenai

I have been very behind in adding posts to my blog. The cabins we stayed in in Seward had no Internet access even though they had advertised that they had it.

These are some pictures taken on our way to Seward.

This is Mount Redoubt volcano across Cook's Inlet from Kenai and Soldotna. It was very windy and cold on the inlet.
This was a very small one room quilt shop in Cooper Landing. Not much fabric, but very cute.

David over looking the Kenai river. What a beautiful river with some great lodges on the river. Sockeye salmon in the Kenai. The fish were so plentiful you could reach right in the water and pick them up. They were beautiful to see in the water. You can see why the Kenai is a major fishing destination.

The famous Kenai River.

Musk Ox Farm & Alaska State Fair

For over 15 years I have wanted to visit this Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, AK. the fibers that come from the under coat and under belly of the musk ox are 8 times warmer than wool and are very soft. The animal is never shaved for the fibers, but is combed. The Native Eskimos from the various villages knit scarvess, hats, etc with the quviut yarn and sell it through the OOmingmak
shop in Anchorage. Each Eskimo village knits a pattern specific from their village. The animals, although they look very large are much smaller than buffalo.

I wonder if the kitties would like a musk ox playmate?

I WUV YOU !!!!

This little baby was born in May. He is just so sweet and curious.

This musk ox is 18 months old. Isn't he cute. David is giving him some fresh grass for lunch. He'll follow you anywhere for a snack like that.

ON TO THE ALASKA STATE FAIR>

How's this for a giant cabbage?

This 9lb zucchini is one of the smaller ones grown in Palmer.

This is the view from the Fair Grounds in Palmer.

Anchorage and Turnagain Arm

It was a dreary and over cast day in Anchorage.
W e went on a drive south toward Seward.

Men fishing at Ships Creek in downtown Anchorage.

Turgain Arm at Buluga Point. Whales were visable in the water.

An iceberg near Portage Glacier. Unfortunately the visabiity was so bad due to the weather, we couldn't see the Glacier.

A distant glacier.

Since the skys were so cloudy and views were so bad, we paid a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conseration Refuge. Lots of animals there to see including orphaned moose babies.

Anchorage , Day 1

Our rental car in Alaska. LOL

Our first big Alaskan breakfast at Gwennies Old Alaskan Resaurant

How's this for a big Alaskan breakfast? David's corned beef hash & eggs.
My eggs and bacon. Anyone care for a
half pound of thick sliced bacon?

This was the bear butt at the next table.

No visit to Anchorage would be complete without a trip to the ULU FACTORY to watch them make the native Alaskan knife.

We visited a couple of very nice quilt shops int he Anchorge area today. Didn't buy much though----not for $12 / yd. YIKES!!!!!! The good news is there is no sales tax in Anchorage.
