On the Road to Buena Vista

We left in the morning for Buena Vista after an easy trip to the airport to drop off the rental car. The road to BV was Highway 50, and it was an extremely scenic drive. It was a two lane highway most of the way and the old MH had some difficulties climbing the mountain to 11,00 feet in a couple of areas. Also, we ran into road maintenance crews in a few different areas which ready slowed down our progress. I'm going to post most of the pictures without a lot of description. These pictures do not do justice to the actual views we saw along the way. They became more and more spectacular as we drove along.
A lot of these pictures were taken through the wind shield, so they may not be particularly clear or they may be full of bug guts. Either way--I'm sorry.
Beautiful cattle ranches in the valleys.
                                                                            Tomichi Creek
Getting ready to climb the mountain.

                                                  Blue Mesa Reservoir

Here's where we got stuck behind the line painting truck for miles and miles.

Beautiful valleys with snow capped mountains in the background.

Scary ride going over Monarch Pass.

Those snow capped mountains are no longer in the distance, but right next to us and we're still climbing. In some cases we were looking down on those snow capped mountains.

We stopped near here in at a turnout off the road to make our lunch before continuing.

More traffic jams behind the road maintenance truck.
Here we are at our campground for the next 2 nights, Unbelievable views of the nearby snow capped mountains and Mt Princeton.
Not a bad view anywhere around.

  1. Breathtaking! I know it was aggravating to be behind the maintenance truck, but at least you could enjoy the scenery while you waited. Those curves do look scary. I'm not sure I would have handled it as calmly as you!

  2. I decided to knit so I wouldn't focus on the road and telling David to "watch out" the whole way. The views here are much more beautiful than the pictures for sure.
