MACKINAW ISLAND

We spent our last day in St Ignace by taking the ferry to Mackinaw Island. We took the Shepler's ferry at 9:30 in the morning so that we could get back early. The day before we had horrible rains and storms and there was no way we wanted to take a ride over Lake Huron in a windy storm like that, so we scheduled our trip for the following day. We also took the 9:30 ferry because it went down and under the 5 mile long Mackinaw Bridge.

It was a beautiful morning at the ship's dock

We decided to sit on the top deck and oh brother was it cold and windy up there.

There are no cars or motor vehicles on Mackinaw Island, only horses, bicycles or walking on foot. We explored downtown which had a lot of small shops selling souvenirs, T shirts and lots of fudge shops. It was very interesting to be in a town with no cars. As the day wore on more and more people arrived and it was more crowded.

There were several hotels and lots and lots of beautiful Bed and Breakfasts, all with lovely landscaping..

A lots and lots of fudge.
                                                             Murdock's Fudge. Yummy !

We had lunch at the Great Turtle Brewery and Distillery. I had beef brisket tacos and they were fantastic. David had a hamburger and it was good too.

The GRAND HOTEL was awesome. It has the world's longest front porch and overlooks Lake Huron. .Lots of history there.

Fort Mackinac was also on the island and had many events going on while we were there. We could here the cannon going off all day long.

It was a beautiful and warm day to be here and we had a great time, but we were pooped walking all over. And yes, we came home with lots of fudge.
