SAULTE ST MARIE AND THE SOO LOCKS

On Monday we took a drive up to Saulte St Marie to see the Soo Locks. The gravity fed locks are located between the USA and Canada and allow for vessels to travel from Duluth, MN to the Atlantic ocean. If you go to Marinetravel.com you can see where ships are traveling all over the world.

While we were there there was a Soo Locks Tour boat and a huge freighter coming through the locks

The ship very slowly entered the lock from the east. The gate closed and the water level dropped down . The gate opened on the west side and the ship moved out having dropped 21 feet lower so that was at the same level as the water outside the west gate.

The Canadian Ship Algoma Conveyor  which is 750 ft long was the one coming thru the lock as we were there.
It took a while for it to actually move thru, but the little tour boat next to us almost disappeared from sight as the water was lowered 21 ft.

The Soo Lock park was very pretty also.

After we visited the lock we went across the street to the Lock View Restaurant and had lunch. David had fish tacos and I had my first pastie.

The pastie was good, but a little bland. And the brown gravy wasn't needed.
We drove back to St Ignace and stopped on the way in Rutland to buy 2 skeins of hand dyed sock yarn from Fangirl, a local yarn merchant. She had beautiful hand dyed yarn.

On Tuesday we had planned to go to Mackinaw Island, but the weather was horrible.
Thunder storms, lots of heavy rains and winds, so we stayed in and relaxed until it was all gone. We then went out for pizza.
Wednesday will be our Mackinaw Day
